Life on the Surface

In Quas, the majority of the surface world has sunk beneath the ocean. As a result, life on the surface is dramatically different than other D&D 5e campaign worlds. Characters will have more experience with water-based monsters, diets will be trim and heavily reliant on what can be either harvested from the ocean or grown on-board ships & rafts in pots or artificial plots. With a distinct lack of trees, stone, metals, and many of the other elements that are seemingly abundant elsewhere, there are some significant changes in how life has developed in the surface world.

While ink may be easier to come by as people harvest squid from the ocean, paper is basically non-existent. As a result, reading and writing have greatly gone to the wayside resulting in a largely illiterate population. Furthermore, ranged weaponry is limited and designed to be buoyant and/or retrievable. Spears may sound great, but from where did the wood and metal tip come? Once thrown, it would be lost unless attached to a rope. What exactly is the rope made from?

These questions, and balancing a limited supply of resources becomes a very integral part of the surface world’s history, after the great flood. Free diving “Haenyeo” and fishing boats taking centre-stage in food gathering. Kelp & ocean-life are used to keep aging boats afloat. Storms rage without anything to break their flow. Surviving in this life takes far more attention than any concept of gods, deities, and any afterlife.

Two new campaigns recruiting players.

These new campaign slots will see parties of 3-5 Humans discover dry land, fight Gnoll pirates, negotiate with Selkie, experience first contact underground and undersea races.

Can your party help humanity find a land to call home?

Surface Species: The People & Places

Humans

Humanity continues to be among the dominant species of the surface world.

However, while they once spanned the globe with great kingdoms, they have been reduced to floating raft cities, adrift on the ocean largely at the mercy of the currents.

Built from many boats and ships from different kingdoms, each raft city has become largely self-sufficient, relying heavily on free divers (haenyeo) and fishing boats for food & resources.

Gnolls

While the Hyena-like Gnolls may not seem like an obvious survivor, their pack-like tendency allowed them to band together during the great flood.

In present-day Quas, Gnolls pilot large ships and survive as pirates, pillaging human raft cities & fending off attacks to their secret harbors.

Defending what little land remains and stealing from desperate humans has led to sea-based pack tactics that are hard to beat.

Selkie

Shapeshifters of the land & sea, the Selkie are a vital go-between for the dominant surface & underwater species.

While their role as traders is vital, the Selkie have no territory to call their own, instead living a transitory life between surface rafts, harbors, ships, and the underwater realms of the Merfolk & Cecaelis.

Their role is vital to the survival of others, but many Selkie seek the security of a community that doesn’t exist.
